Mamaroneck Shares: Summer Festival Series for Families in Westchester
Unfortunately, this series is not happening in 2014.
On Friday evening, I headed to dinner with my family along Mamaroneck Avenue, a popular strip close to Mamaroneck Harbor and the Long Island Sound with lots of restaurants, shops and things to do. A routine dinner out turned into an evening of fun, as we walked right into a block party along the avenue. This event, part of an annual series of block parties along the avenue, was created with two worthwhile goals in mind: to support local businesses and to raise money for local charities. My kids had a blast and with three more events scheduled throughout the summer, we're sure to be back.
The summer block parties are hosted by Mamaroneck Shares, a local non-profit organization started in 2010 by local restaurant owner/operator Mike Hynes and Peggy Jackson and Ellen Hauptman, founders of a local chapter of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Currently in its 4th year, the series has grown bigger each year and has become part of the village's summer landscape. Read on for the remaining dates and everything else you need to know about the series.
We arrived on Mamaroneck Avenue after 7pm and the party was in full swing. The streets were blocked off and kids were running, playing and laughing everywhere. There was live music playing at different locations along the avenue and several eateries along the strip had extended tables out into the street so patrons could dine without missing all the action. We ate at Frankie & Fannuci's (the pizza is amazing!) then checked out the different activities going on. My kids made a beeline for the hula hoops, trying to see who could hula the longest (I tried to compete but was defeated almost immediately), then went for a romp in a bounce house. My girls tried one of the mini obstacle courses and we all enjoyed the live bands. There was even a belly dancer performing to live Indian music. There was face painting, balloon animals, a trampoline and more. Local vendors set up tables throughout the avenue to showcase food, merchandise and other goods and services.
Throughout the avenue (and at one central information table) collection jars were set up to raise funds for three local charities, At Home on the Sound, Keep aBreast, a local team that supports Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and South East Consortium. At the end of the summer, all funds will be distributed evenly between the three charities. Last year over $28,000 was raised and distributed to local charities and they're hoping to raise even more this year.
Mamaroneck Shares summer block parties are held on Mamaroneck Avenue between Boston Post Road and Halstead Avenue. The first of 4 block parties was Friday, June 14th. If you missed it, no worries--the remaining 3 events will be held on July 19th, August 16th and September 6th (all Fridays) from 7-10:30pm. Admission is free though there are small fees for some attractions (like $2 for the bounce house).
