Yes, it is winter, although you might not know it most of the time! While the unseasonably warm weather means bad things for our skiers out there, it does make romping around outdoors a bit easier. Take advantage of this weather with some fresh air and fun—and maybe even learn a few things—with our list of the best winter nature programs, workshops and events occurring this season in Westchester and the rest of the Lower Hudson Valley. Nature Play for Toddlers – North Salem
January 12, 21; February 4, 16, 23
Held approximately once a week, this new program at the Wolf Conservation Center lets the youngest naturalists meet and learn about the wolves, play games, explore outdoors and do other fun activities. Pre-registration is required. Adults are $12 and children are $10. 

Ecology Club for Families with Special Needs – Rye
Saturday, January 23
Children with special needs and their families can hike at the Rye Nature Center and take part in animal programs, science and sensory activities. FREE

Hudson River Eaglefest – Croton-on-Hudson
Saturday, February 6
Welcome the bald eagle’s return to the Lower Hudson Valley with shows, live music, walks and storytelling, as well as crafts, games and a touch table. Ages 12 and older are $13 each; kids 6-11 are $; 5 and under are FREE. Bus tours (ages 14 and older only) are extra, and prices jump up $2 if you buy tickets the same day as the event. 

Old-Fashioned Winter’s Afternoon – Rye 
Saturday, February 6
Harken back to the old days with this traditional family event at the Rye Nature Center, featuring archery, crafts, fire-roasted marshmallows and even a log-sawing contest! FREE

A Sugaring Off Celebration – Cornwall 
Saturday, February 27
Kick off the start of maple sugar season at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum’s Outdoor Discovery Center. Activities will include Native American storytelling, crafts, games and treats. Two different maple sugar tours will be available: a one-mile moderate hike and a shorter jaunt that’s ideal for little legs. $10 adults, $7 children ages 3-17; Members: $7 adults, $4 children 

Wild Nature Trivia – Scarsdale 
Sunday, February 28
Kids 5 and older can test their nature know-it-all skills at the Greenburgh Nature Center. The challenge will conclude with some animal interactions. Members $5/person, Non-members $8/person

Maple Sugaring Party – Scarsdale 
Sunday, March 6
Spring will have almost arrived when the peak of maple sugaring occurs. This party at the Greenburgh Nature Center will include sap-collection demos, crafts, and candy and porridge making. Fee is $5/members, $10/non-members if you register by March 5; the fee jumps to $8 and $15 the day of the event. Kids under 2 are FREE.
