Westchester Kids Will Have a Summer to Remember at Gate Hill Day Camp

10/1/14 - By Linda DiProperzio

Now that my boys are getting older, I’m looking more seriously at summer day camps as not only a way to keep them occupied when school is out, but also as a place where they can explore their interests, try new things and, of course, have fun with friends. After reading about our sponsor Gate Hill Day Camp and its variety of programs, I'm sad they're not in my area (I'm on Long Island). Because whether your children want to spend their summer improving their athletic skills, learning to cook, or exploring the arts and sciences, there is something for most kids ages 3-15.

Located on 33 acres in Stony Point, Gate Hill Day Camp—family-owned and operated for two generations—has plenty to keep kids happy. From swimming, zip lining and fishing to musical productions, cooking classes and art workshops, there is something to pique every camper's interest. Kids can improve on an emerging talent and skill, or test the waters on something completely new.

Campers are grouped based on age, with each division allowing children to thrive within an exciting and developmentally age appropriate program. These include:

Villagers (3 years-Kindergarten): The littlest campers enjoy junior-sized fields and courts, as well as special program areas like Buddy’s Playhouse (indoor play center), early childhood arts, an introductory heated pool and the Village playtown.

Pathfinders (Grades 1-2): This program combines both creative and physical activities, with campers choosing one weekly program elective.

Pioneers (Grades 3-4): Campers are able to refine their sports skills, as well as develop a lifelong hobby with two weekly electives.

Mountaineers (Grades 5-6): Mountaineers fully experience the freedom of a diverse summer program charged with fun and adventure, which includes trips off-grounds throughout the summer.

Trailblazers (Grades 7-9): Through a combination of day and overnight trips, as well as selected camp experiences, Trailblazers experience adventures daily. This year campers can enjoy trips to Great Wolf Lodge, Mountain Creek Water Park, Dorney Park, and Kings Dominion.

LIT (Leader In Training): This is a specially designed program for the oldest teen campers. The LIT program is divided into three varying experiences: Spending time learning to work as counselors with younger campers; camp activities, swimming and day trips; and building life and work skills, such as CPR, leadership, peer communication, and game facilitation.

If your children have special interests in the arts and sciences that they want to dive into throughout the summer, the Explorers program for kids entering grades 3-9 might be a good option. The campers spend their mornings in exclusive, week-long workshops based on 5 core categories: Science and Technology, Creative and Digital Arts, Strategic Games, Music and Theater, and History and Social Science.

Of course, no summer is complete without swimming. Gate Hill has a proven learn to swim program, with an aquatics center that includes a Splash Park and heated pool complex. The camp provides daily bathing suit laundering and fresh towel service (oh, the joy of someone else doing your child's laundry!), as well as healthy hot lunch choices prepared daily by the on-site chef. Transportation is available for Westchester residents.

Parents can choose from a 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 week session, and private tours are available 7 days per week, so don’t hesitate to call at 845-947-3223. And for more ideas on camps in the area, be sure to check out our Westchester Camp Guide.
