Catalina Island Museum's 37th Annual Avalon Silent Film Showcase
Catalina Island Museum's 37th annual Avalon Silent Film Showcase offers an authentic 1920s cinematic experience
The festival is one of the world’s longest-running annual celebrations of Silent Film.
Films:
Friday May 17:
Blackmail, Alfred Hitchcock's last silent film. The film was shot as a silent film first, and then portions of it were re-shot and sound was added, with both the silent and talkie versions released in 1929. Randy Haberkamp, EVP of the Library, Archive and SciTech for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, introduces the film and shares a presentation about the silent versus sound versions.
Saturday May 18:
Safety Last, one of Harold Lloyd's most popular films, in which he stars as a small-town boy who leaves his rural home to make a name for himself as a man of means in the city. Suzanne Lloyd Hayes, granddaughter of Harold Lloyd, is on hand to introduce the film and talk about his lasting impact on film history.
Both screenings feature live musical accompaniment by Michael Mortilla. The events are held under the stars in the Ackerman Family Amphitheater.
